CBD oil has become increasingly popular over the last few years, and we can understand why with its many potential health benefits. Cannabidiol (CBD) originates from the Hemp strain of the cannabis plant and is a chemical compound that interacts positively throughout the body and brain; however, the most commonly known strains of the cannabis plant also have a psychoactive counterpart caused THC, which is a substance that is illegal in the UK.

CBD is a potentially appealing option for those who are looking for relief from stress, pain, and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of THC in cannabis or other side effects related to some pharmaceutical drugs. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and then blending it with a carrier oil like coconut oil or hemp seed oil.  There are two main types of cannabis plants, one is Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa. Both plants can create CBD but only cannabis Sativa can produce hemp-based CBD.

What is the best strength CBD oil to use?

Purchasing the correct CBD oil for you and the purpose you want it for can be overwhelming, due to the many options and confusing stats surrounding it. Things to consider when buying are the condition you are treating, the concentration of CBD itself, if other cannabinoids are present within the oil you choose, and how severe the symptoms are of the condition you are looking to treat.

The main thing to note is that CBD potency is related to the strength measured in mg, but these potencies are also dependent on the size of the bottle you choose. For example, 1,000mg in a 10ml bottle will be 3 times stronger than 1,000mg in a 30ml bottle. The main mg quantities of CBD s sold in the UK are:

  • 1000mg
  • 1500mg

There are more potent options but the above are the most common. As for bottle sizes, they’re normally sold in 10 or 30,  bottles.

To begin with, if you are a first-time user of CBD oil, you should start off with a lower potency. Everyone’s thresholds will be different but slow and steady wins the race and monitor your body’s reaction. CFAH (LINK) has a calculation you can make to determine the strength of CBD oil which is:

[AMOUNT OF CBD IN MG] ÷ [BOTTLE SIZE IN ML] = STRENGTH IN MG/ML

  • Anything below 5 mg/mL (10%) is considered low strength.
  • Anything between 15 and 30 mg/mL (15-30%) is medium strength.
  • Anything between 30 and 60 (30-60%) is high strength.

UK Guidelines recommend a maximum of 70mg of CBD per day

What is the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil?

The short answer is hemp oil and CBD oil both come from the Cannabis Sativa plant, but the hemp seed oil is only extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant, which is a variety of the cannabis Sativa plant that contains less than 0.2% THC, while CBD oil comes from the leaves, stalks, and flowers of both cannabis and hemp plants. Commercial products containing hemp seed and CBD oils do not cause a high, since the levels of THC, if any, are very low. Both CBD oil and hemp seed oil have numerous potential health benefits.

Hemp oil contains omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, gamma-linoleic acid, and other nutritional antioxidants. It is also high in B vitamins and vitamin D. Hemp oil typically has more nutritional benefits, while CBD oil can help in treating the most common conditions we mentioned above (anxiety and depression)  but is also said to have benefits for digestion,, heart and skin health conditions, ). And, when it comes to hemp oil vs. CBD oil for pain relief, CBD oil wins (although hemp oil can help as well).

What is CBD good for?

Amongst many studies in the UK and elsewhere BBC Good Food suggested that early evidence looking into the use of CBD in the treatment of anxiety and depression has found some exciting results – although on very small samples. The first study assessed anxiety links with public speaking; it found a very specific dose of CBD (300mg) showed anti-anxiety effects. The second study was a stand-alone case report of one child with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It found CBD oil helped the child safely reduce her anxiety and improve sleep.

All HEMPLIFE CBD Oils are classified as “Broad Spectrum” which means they contain all the positive beneficial Cannabinoids from the Hemp plant, but the trace amounts of THC are removed making it suitable for all sports and professionals that have a zero-tolerance policy.
